- Description:
- Bedspread. Candlewick. Weft loop cotton counterpane woven in imitation of an imported Bolton spread; the design features a center panel with a basket of flowers, surrounded on three sides with a tree-like border followed by a four-sided border woven with a dot pattern. An inscription is worked across the top panel: "Sarah Sargent Canterbury 1829"; a line of hearts is woven above the inscription. Deep three-sided border worked around this center panel features a leafy vine and a design of alternating pine and deciduous trees; across top edge is a stylized line of flowers. All designs are geometric, as dictated by the woven structure. Three sides of the counterpane are edged with a 9-inch-deep netted and fringed edging. The counterpane is seamed up center; each panel is 37.25" wide; the woven pattern is expertly matched.
