Description:
Quilt. Made of a pieced top of printed wools from the 1860s-1880s, that has been laid over an earlier whole cloth wool quilt, dating to 1820-1840. The original whole cloth quilt was constructed of a dark blue worsted damask (visible through holes in the top), with a home-dyed yellow plain-woven wool back. Quilting pattern is a diamond grid filled with various stylized floral motifs in the center, with a border of an undulating feather. The cut-out corners of the quilt appear to have been an alteration with the new top, as they cut the original quilting pattern awkwardly. New top is pieced in a Four Patch block (with two opposing quadrants divided diagonally) alternating with a plain block, set on point. Fabrics are various dark and madder printed wools, many typically used for dressing gowns in the 1860s through the 1880s. Quilting that attaches this top to the older quilt beneath is simple vertical lines. Binding is dark green wool twill tape. Batting is wool. The drops measure 19 1/4 x 20 inches.
