Object Name:
Quilt
Object ID:
1990.500
Date:
1850-1886
Description:
Quilt. Friendship. Made of blocks pieced in the Album Patch pattern, which looks like an X, with a white square in the middle, a place for the name, inscribed in ink. The blocks, gathered in the mid-19th century, are all hand-pieced, but the sashing and bound edge finish are machine-stitched, which also indicates completion of the friendship quilt, c. 1886. The calicoes are mostly the typical brown and double pinks of the mid-19th century. The sashing is plain white cotton. The backing is a brown mill print from 1850-1875; it is also used for the straight-grain applied edge binding. The batting is unevenly distributed, but generally thin. Quilting is in simple diagonal lines at about five stitches to the inch.
