Quilt

Place of Origin:
Haverhill, NH/Benton, NH
Date:
1848
Description:
Quilt. Friendship type, pieced in the album block, which looks like an X through the square block; the centers of the X's are signed in ink with names of people from the towns of Haverhill and Benton, NH; some blocks include the year 1848. The blocks vary in size from 10 1/4 to 11 inches; they are arranged in a straight set, with plain white sashing. The quilt has deep cut-out corners to the depth of two blocks on each side (24 x 24 inches). The fabrics used for the block piecing are various dress calicoes of the 1840s, including a number of Prussian blue prints. Other predominating colors are shades of brown and pink. The backing is a brown furniture chintz, printed on a low quality cotton. The batting is unevenly distributed, but very thin in most spots; the binding is plain white cotton (same as the sashing) stitched on the straight grain. The quilting is simple: diagonal lines through the sashing, and concentric squares in the blocks. It is worked in white cotton and other colored threads, so that it blends with the color of the fabric on top, worked at 6 or 7 stitches to the inch.
