Place of Origin:
Wilton, NH
Date:
1860-1870
Description:
Quilt. Pieced with large (16" x 16") Chimney Sweep blocks set on point, with bright green calico sashing; no border. The calicoes used are dress prints fashionable from the 1840s to the 1860s, predominately in shades of brown and madder red; there are also double pinks. The quilt is T-shaped with 14.5" x 13.5" inch cut-out corners. The backing is pieced of two calicoes; one is a madder red and brown printed check design, and the other is a tan stylized floral spot design. The edges are bound with the green calico on the straight grain; the binding along the top edge is pieced out with some blue and white woven gingham. The quilting design is simple--concentric squares in the pieced blocks and straight lines in the sashing. White thread is used in the blocks, and blue or khaki is used in the sashing; the quilting is 7 stitches to the inch.
