Kerchief
- Object Name:
- Kerchief
- Object ID:
- 1967.027.69
- Date:
- 1850-1875
- Description:
- Tablecloth - white cotton null; white hand-embroidered border; scalloped edge. This is probably a Belgian or French import and is possibly a shawl. It has a great shape.
Woman's kerchief or shawl, of sheer white cotton mull, embroidered around the scalloped edges with a design of leaves and flowers in white cotton. The embroidery is worked so that the kerchief can be folded in half diagonally, and the right side of the embroidery will show on both layers. The perfect regularity of the embroidery, with the exact same stitches in a motif and the thread carried in the exact same place from motif to motif, indicate that this is machine-embroidered, placing its date around the third quarter of the 19th century. This date suggests that it was worn by an older, rather old-fashioned lady. - Material:
