Bedspread
Object ID:

Date:
1820-1870
Description:
Coverlet. "Summer and Winter" overshot technique; woven, white cotton ways; green wool pattern. Fringe on three sides; bottom fringe is self-fringe; two sides tape fringe. Woven in two shades of green wool and white cotton yarns. The woven pattern, which is reversible, features large blocks of four squares sashed with more blocks but in a smaller scale. The weaver apparently ran out of the dark olive green wool, and had to switch to a different shade of green to have enough to finish her weaving. It appears that she was aware of the problem, and so wove the different color through the center of her run, then after it was off the loom, she cut the length in half, and seamed it so that the bluer shade of green is all at the top--in about one and a half pattern repeats on one side, and one pattern repeat on the other. Each panel is about 43 inches wide. The top edge is hemmed, the bottom edge is self-fringed, and a woven fringe is applied on the sides.
