- Description:
- Coverlet. Owned by Mary C. Prescott (1811-1862), Pittsfield, NH; 1820-1860. Double-woven, in dark blue and rusty orange wool and white cotton yarns. The pattern is a square grid with a block of nine balls at the intersections; inside the grid's squares are geometric motifs of stepped circles. On one side, blue is predominate; the colors are reversed on the other side, with the orange predominating. Woven border around three sides depicting trees in groups of three. The coverlet is seamed up the center; the pattern is well matched. Each panel is approximately 36 inches wide. There are a few minor weaving errors. The top edge is bound with a dark blue cotton tape (it appears to be mercerized cotton, which would date it post-1880), and the bottom edge is self-fringed. The sides are selvedge.
