- Description:
- Quilt. Attributed to Susan Plumer (1804-1882); Boscawen, NH; 1830-1850. Made of dress calicoes from the 1830s and 1840s, pieced in a Diamond in a Square pattern, but with the fabrics varying around the corners of the square, instead of being all of one pattern; Cut out corners. Blocks are straight set, with sashing of mostly a light blue dress calico; the last four horizontal sashing rows at the bottom of the quilt are a darker blue print. Many of the centers of the blocks are made from a popular furnishing chintz of the period, with a bird and tree design in dark red and green. The colors predominating in the blocks are shades of brown, and double pinks. The blocks measure approximately 6.5" square. The drops are deep: 27.5" x 26", and are bordered along the bottom with a brown, blue, and white printed check pattern, with a small flower printed in white blocks. The edges of the cut-outs are bound straight grain with this checked print; the drops are finished front to back, and the top has a knife edge finish. Blue, pink, and white cotton threads are all used for the quilting, which is simply X's in the blocks and three straight lines through the sashing. The quilt is backed with a calico printed with a blue vine pattern.
