Date:
1780-1840
Description:
Bed skirt, late 18th century. Red monochrome print on linen fabric, classical subject. Top edge gathered, all others bound. Unlined. Pieced several times. Lower 12" same fabric as 19.15.31.

Bed skirt, constructed in the 1830s or later from a late 18th-century copperplate-printed "toile," woven with a linen warp and cotton weft. This print is the lower part of the print that is seen in valances 1975.037.01a-b. It depicts a woman in pseudo classical drapery (one breast revealed) holding a wreath of flowers. Another woman is seated next to her at the base of a large urn of flowers, and another woman stands next to urn, bearing a sheaf of wheat. There are also sections of the cherub section of this print. In all, at least eleven pieces of the prints are pieced together to make this bed skirt; further evidence of the fabric's reuse can be seen in the uneven fading from one section to another. The bedskirt is not lined. It is bound around the sides and bottom with a 19th-century manufactured cotton tape, and gathered onto the same tape across the top. Ties of the tape are stitched at intervals across the top.
