- Description:
- Bed valance--end piece, late 1700's. Red monochorme printed on linen. Subject: Mythological scenes, including the goddess Minerva with attributes of temple and owl, obelisk and putti. Braid bound edges; lined with linen. 54 " wide at top, flares to 61" at bottom. 13 1/2 : wide plus attaching strip.
Valance for the foot of the bed, constructed of two pieces of a late 18th-century copperplate-printed cotton/linen (linen warp; cotton weft). Both pieces show the same section of a red-on-white "toile" print showing cherubs floating in clouds; one cherub holds a basket of flowers on his head; the other cherub has a string attached to a bird that is cut off, but some tail feathers are evident. An owl sits in a tree to the right of the cherubs. The tops of classical monuments are seen at the bottom of the print (which align to the part of the print seen in bedskirt 1975.037.02). The valance is cut with a shallow scallop across the bottom; it is backed with plain-woven linen, and bound with a 19th-century manufactured cotton tape. A strip of linen is stitched across the top to act as a tacking strip. This valance was probably made in the 1830s or later from a late 18th-century plate-print textile. - Material:
