- Date:
- 1739-1789
- Description:
- Sheet. Off-white handwoven linen (of cotton). Center seam. Sheet of white cotton, hand-woven of Z-twist singles. Constructed of two widths of fabric, each with a selvedge width of 36". Marked in pale tan silk cross stitch, "E F", at center top edge. Top and bottom edges are hemmed; sides are selvedge. Old inked cotton label is stitched at one corner: "Ebenezer Flagg. / 1739. [or 1789]." While an all-cotton sheet would be very unusual in 1739 (or even 1789), it is not impossible, as the colonies imported raw cotton (called "cotton wool") in the 18th century and spun it at home. The fiber identification was confirmed by microscopic analysis.
