Description:
Quilt. Made by Lucy Lane (1805-1844) of Stratham, NH; c. 1820. Framed whole cloth, constructed of a late 18th-century brown block-printed floral pattern cotton with pencil blue in the center, and a border of an indigo resist print, with a design of stylized floral vines. The brown block print is very pieced, indicating its previous form of a dress. The quilt backing is various reused plain-woven linens, some of which are worn thin from their previous use. One piece of the linen bears the cross-stitched initial "L." Knife edge around all four sides. There appears to be no batting. Simple quilting in a diamond grid with brown and blue cotton thread at six stitches to the inch. Three corners of the blue border are pieced out with a blue and white polka dot print. Hand written in ink on paper, and later removed and mounted on iron-on pellon, label originally attached to the lower right corner of the back: "Presented by Miss Lucy Lane / to her niece Amanda M. Lane / May 15, 1840. / This quilt was made / from a dress which her Grandmother / gave to her, with the request that a quilt might be made of it. / for her to remember her by--"
