- Description:
- Quilt. Made by Sarah A. Wilson (1847-1916), Hooksett, NH; 1880-1910. Crazy design, made of 30 blocks measuring approximately 10.25" square. The piecing of the blocks is random, with the various shapes edged with decorative stitches, such as herringbone and variations on the feather stitch, in silk twist embroidery threads. The fabrics are all silk and include satins, prints, brocades, plush, and ottoman in burgundy, brown, cream, black, and other colors. One patch of dark burgundy silk is printed in silver with a horse head and globe pierced by an arrow, and with a large C emblazoned on it, along with the word "Trademark"; this was probably taken from a man's hat lining. The crazy-pieced blocks are bordered along the sides only with a strip of triangular-pieced silks. The quilt is finished around all four edges with piping that is covered with different pieced silks. Three sides are further trimmed with a five-inch flounce of machine-made embroidered net lace. The top edge, which does not have the flounce, has several red silk twill tape loops for hanging the quilt, which appear to be original. Backed with a lightly glazed white cotton cambric.
