Description:
Quilt. Made by Elizabeth C. Gilman (1843-1898), Belmont, NH; 1880-1898. Crazy design, probably intended for a table throw, constructed in two vertical panels, each about 13.5" wide. The patchwork is all done in velvets, including some voided velvets. Some patches are embroidered with floral designs in silk twist, including black-eyed Susans, a rose, goldenrod, and forget-me-nots. The colors are dark and include shades of burgundy, brown, gold, and blue. The edges of the randomly sized patches are embellished with various forms of feather stitch embroidery, herringbone, and other decorative stitches. (One patch seems to have replacement stitching, as it is poorly executed in a coarse cream-colored silk thread.) The quilt is backed with blue cotton sateen, and edged with a narrow flounce of cream silk that is so deteriorated that it looks more like fringe at this point.
