Description:
Quilt. Made by Emma A. Gove (1867-1956), Candia, NH; 1885. Crazy design, composed of 25 squares of randomly pieced velvets and silks. These fabrics are embellished with various decorative embroidery stitches to cover the seams, as well as embroidered motifs on some of the patches, including goldenrod (which is embroidered with chenille yarns), a red rose, and a purple lily-like flower. Additionally, a lady's boot and a brown velveteen horse are appliqued on patches. A block at the top center bears three souvenir ribbons from G.A.R. and other Civil War fraternal organization reunions that took place in 1876 and 1881. In the center is a block embroidered with the year "1885," flanked by blocks with the name "Charlie" and "Emma." The quilt apparently was unfinished until about 1920 or later, when someone stitched onto it a backing of silk satin printed with a pastel blue and black leaf and dot pattern. Backing fabric is extended into a narrow flounce around the edges of the crazy quilt.
