- Description:
- Quilt. Attributed to Hepzibah Whittier, Hampstead, NH; 1810-1830. Whole-cloth wool, with green face and khaki-colored back. Stitched with a design of vertical undulating feather vines on a chevron background. The quilting is worked in khaki-colored worsted thread at about 6 stitches to the inch. The quilt fabrics could have been domestically produced; they are both plain-woven wools. The green of the front was originally more intense, but bled through to the other layers when it was washed at some point. The coarse wool backing was probably originally a natural cream color, judging by edges in damaged areas, but is now a khaki color from the green discoloration and general dirt. A "W" is cross-stitched in black thread at one corner on the back. One area of damage on the back reveals a double layer of fabric, possibly indicating the reuse of the backing fabric, forcing the maker to patch a weak area. The quilt has a newer binding of gray-green cotton.
