Description:
Blanket. Made by Amanda K. Winter (1815-1869), Grantham, NH; 1830-1832. Twill-woven cream wool, made of two panels, and seamed up the center. The selvedge width of the left panel is 32.5". Embroidered with crewel yarns in shades of gold, cream, pink, and two shades of blue. The design features compass roses in the corners; each rose is slightly different in coloring and/or stitches employed, but all have a star shape in the center and a circular frame of three rows of herringbone stitches. Along the sides is embroidered an arched border in gold yarns, with three-part floral sprigs with pink buds emanating from underneath and between the arches. At the center bottom of the blanket, the maker cross-stitched her name: "Amanda K. Winter." Three edges are hemmed; the left edge is selvedge; all edges are embellished with herringbone stitches in pale gold. Other stitches used in the blanket include surface satin and an open chain stitch that looks like half of a feather stitch.
