- Description:
- Blanket. Made by Amanda K. Winter (1815-1869), Grantham, NH; 1830-1832. Twill-woven cream wool, constructed in two panels and seamed up the center. The selvedge width is about 33.5'. Embroidered with crewel yarns in a design of floral wreaths in each corner. Joining the wreaths across the top and bottom are border designs of arches with three-part floral sprigs with red buds growing under and between the arches. Along the bottom border, red and blue flowers sprout in addition. At the center along the edge of this border, the maker embroidered her name "Amanda Winter" in cross stitches. Crewel yarn colors are red, two shades of blue, gold, and cream. Stitches include suface satin, an open chain stitch that looks like half a feather stitch, herringbone, and cross. The top and bottom edges of the blanket are hemmed and the sides are selvedge. All of the edges are embellished with herringbone stitches in blue crewel yarn.
