Description:
Quilt. Made by Maude L. Robinson (1880-1960) and her husband, Lew F. Robinson (1885-1955), Manchester, NH; 1920-1929. Pieced with printed silk ribbons used to tie bundles of cigars together ("cigar silks"). The ribbons are mostly shades of yellow, but there are also red, pale blue, and cream silks. The silks are all printed in black with the brand names, including 7-20-4; 7-20-4 PONY'S; 97; AXMINSTER; Banner Ward Five; BATTERY; BLOOMER CLUB; Blue Label; BRESNAHAN'S 56; Delicias; D.H. 10; Feifer's Union 5s; FLYING DUDE; FOREST; Glendon Club; G.M.L.; G&S 49; G.W.A.'s LA NORMA; HARVARD PONIES; IN IT; J.A.; J.F.N.; J.H.P. & CO.; JUNIORS; KENNARD; KEY STONE; Lane & Connelly; LAWRENCE'S 103; Little Gold Dust; LITTLE MOOSE; Londres; Marguerite; M.C.A.; MOOSE CLUB; Moose Club PERFECTOS; THE OSBORNE; PANETELLAS; PARROT; PRECOURT; QUEEN CITY; QUINCY; R.B.; REINA VICTORIA; ROBINSON'S BEST; SHERIDAN; Smoke Gentlemen Cigars; Spanish DUDE; Upmann's Extra 5; W. & B. BLACKSTONE; and Wild Oats. One strip is signed in ink, "Thomas B. Reed". The narrow strips of silk are arranged, string fashion, in the form of a diamond in a square quilt block (in this case, diamond in a square in a diamond). The blocks, which measure approximately 18.5" square (some smaller blocks are pieced with an additional strip to make them the right size), are sashed with more string-pieced cigar ribbons on the diagonal. It is bordered with more cigar ribbons in red/white and red/yellow stripes. All of the seams between ribbons (but not between blocks) are covered with black feather stitching in silk thread. The backing is pieced of large rectangles of pastel-colored silks, including pink, lavender, blue, cream, and yellow. There are several silks that are the same woven pattern, but different colorways. The edges are finished back to front. The top is attached to the back with dark red silk yarn knots.
