- Description:
- Quilt. Attributed to Mary Elizabeth Plumer (1822-1899), Epping, NH; 1840-1850. Pieced with a block design of eight-pointed stars (Ohio Star variation) arranged on point and alternating with a plain block of a furniture chintz print. The pieced blocks feature dress prints in typical 1820s and 1830s designs, including florals and ombre plaids and stripes, in both cylinder prints and block prints. The stars are set against a background within the block of chrome yellow printed with a dark line meander that makes the fabric look like it is chartreuse, rather than yellow. A variety of furniture chintzes are used and they appear to be recycled from a previous form, as blocks of the same fabric are more or less faded, but the fading is inconsistent with other surrounding fabrics. The backing is heavy cotton muslin. Marked in an upper corner, "M E Plumer" in black cross stitches. The quilt has deep cut-out corners ~22" x 22". The quilting pattern is a diamond grid pattern, with fillings of echoed right angles, or parallel lines. The quilting is done in white cotton thread at about seven stitches to the inch. Edges are finished with manufactured green/brown/tan woven tape (commonly called "Trenton tape").

- Provenance:
- The quilt came from donors' (siblings) paternal grandparents' house in East Derry, NH. According to family history the quilt came through the family of Annie Bartlett Shepard (donors grandmother) in Epping, N.H. "M E Plumer" embroidered on the quilt probably refers to Mary Elizabeth Plumer (1822-1899) of Epping. She was the daughter of Hon. William Plumer (1789-1854) and granddaughter of Gov. William Plumer (1759-1850).
