- Description:
- Coverlet. Made by Hannah Wilson (1787-1869), Farmington, NH, for Abigail Hayes, (1813-1896), Farmington, NH; 1838. Woven with a supplementary weft loop of dark blue wool and natural-colored cotton. Design consists of a central medallion of an octagon filled with stylized tree and flower motifs oriented towards a star in the center. The octagon is framed by a rectangle filled with dots, and with flowers in the corners. The next frame features stylized flowers emanating from a footed vessel; the next frame is filled with eight-pointed stars. The two following frames are on three sides only; the first is of flowers in a vessel with deeply scrolled handles; and the last border design features an undulating line with flowers sprouting from the dips and humps. Top edge is worked with the inscription: "Abigail Hayes no 97 1838." Woven in three panels, and seamed twice; the pattern is perfectly matched along the seams. Each panel is approximately 32 inches wide. Fringe of dark blue wool yarn is attached on three sides; the top edge is hemmed.
