Description:
Bedspread. Printed cotton. Glazed cotton (chintz) print repeat pattern showing two colorful birds (red, yellow, blue, white, brown) perched on tropical flowering plants; red yellow and white blossoms, green leaves, red berries. Brown background. Coverlet made up of several panels, each with identical patterns. Cut-out corners. White 2" wide edging around bottom edges, side edges, and side folds (not along top edge). Paper label stitched to front, handwritten by Alice F. Tripp, "This counterpane is / more than 135 years / old. having heirs in / the family for five / generations Loaned / by Mrs. Walter H. Tripp." Sewn-in fabric label, lower back corner, printed, "Mrs. Alice F. Tripp". Bedcover of furniture chintz, cylinder printed with a design of a hoopoe bird (identified by the fan-shaped crest and striped wings) and another red/blue bird with a crest like a woodpecker's sitting in a palm tree within a large floral arrangement. The flowers are mostly identifiable: rose or peony, morning glories, passion flowers, and daisies. The background is brown and the pattern is printed in green, red, yellow, blue, and black. The pattern repeat is 12 inches. The bedcover is constructed in a T-shape, with strips of white chintz stitched along the sides and bottom to outline the top of the bed (like piping, but in strips, rather than cording, and not incorporated into the seams, but stitched on top of the fabric and folded over). More strips of white chintz are stitched around the edges as a border. The furniture chintz is pieced of several smaller sections of fabric along the left side of the center panel. The cut-out corners are deep: about 27 x 25. See description above for transcriptions of paper labels attached to the cover.
