Description:
Quilt. Made by Mary R. (Boucher) Bouffard (1868-1955), Nashua, NH, 1890-1915. Crazy pattern. Constructed of randomly shaped pieces of silk arranged in 42 blocks that are sized approximately 8 inches square. (7 rows x 6 columns). Several pieces are embroidered with Kate Greenaway figures and other motifs (horse, horseshoe, bird) in a fine outline stitch. Other motifs (butterfly, flowers) are embroidered with multi-colored silks in satin stitches, French knots, etc. Several elements are also appliqued, including a butterfly and another flying bug. Additionally, a patch of pale pink plain-woven silk is embroidered "1772" within a cartouche; another patch of cream silk with a woven motif is embroidered "Mother Fellows / Wedding Mantle / 1807"; and a third patch is embroidered "M. A. L." One patch is finely painted with a spray of pink flowers. Silks include cisele velvets, plain weaves, shag, ombre, brocades, stripes, etc., in black and generally lighter shades of tan, blue, pink, gold, gray, etc. The quilt, which appears to be wadded between the silk patches and the foundation, is effectively quilted by the embroidery, (visible on back only). It is edged with a gathered ruffle of striped pink and gray silk. Backing is pale peach twill-woven cotton. Backing is tied to the top with tufts of burgundy silk thread.
