Description:
Quilt. "Sawtooth Star" pattern. Pieced with a center field of eight-pointed stars (unequal nine patch) constructed of various indigo blue, tan, and brown cotton prints. Star blocks measure approximately 7.5" square. Straight set, alternating with a unpieced block of pink and white calico. Center field is surrounded on three sides with a deep border made up of two different engraved prints, probably one copperplate print, the other a cylinder print, both red on white. A fourth edge has a narrow border of the same. One of the border prints titled "Les Bergers Ecossais (The Scottish Shepherds)", manufactured by Favre-Petitpierre et Cie, Nantes, France, has a design of Scottish men in plaid kilts, one with a bagpipe, along with villagers in 18th-century European work dress conversing under a palm tree. Another scene within the same print features a traveling family--a woman holding a baby riding a donkey with baskets attached on the sides, and a man holding a stick with an attached bundle; he also holds the hand of a little boy. The other print engraved by Thomas Sutherland (1785-1838) for George Palfreyman in Manchester, England features Britannia clothed in armor and carrying a scepter seated in a carriage drawn by lions; the reins are held by a winged cherub, and an angel with a trumpet floats above. A large parrot sits in a tree in front of the chariot; under the tree stand two Oriental figures. The pattern repeat is about 10", so this is a cylinder print. Mixed linen/cotton backing that appears to have originally been a sheet, as a cross-stitched initial is turned to the inside. Quilting is done in white linen thread and cotton thread at about 7 stitches to the inch in a diamond pattern through the border and parallel diagonal lines through the center.
