- Description:
- Hand Towel. Owned by Sarah (Hook) Bartlett (1765-1793), Kingston, NH; 1775-1790. White linen diamond pattern weave, heavily spotted. 1/2" high cross-stiched letters in gold/brown thread, at top of towel. Linen tape loop stitched at the center-top of towel. 20" long, 31" high. Woven in a goose-eye twill pattern. The top edge is selvedge. The two long sides are hemmed by hand. The bottom edge is selvedge, with an applied fringe of linen threads. (Close inspection reveals that the header of the applied fringe, which looks like a hemmed edge of the towel, is plain-woven, unlike the towel.) The selvedge width is 31.25 inches. The initials "S H" are marked in brown silk cross stitch at the top center. There are scattered weaving errors present throughout the towel.
