- 1941.012.02.1
- Date:
- 1750-1790
- Description:
- Embroidered petticoat border. One shade of blue linen thread embroidered in a variety of stitches on plain-woven cream linen. The design is of a scrolling floral vine, with motifs like those typically seen in 18th-century crewelwork, including stylized roses, carnations, iris, and pomegranates. Stitches include outine, New England laid, herringbone, seed, buttonhole wheel, and buttonhole. The filling of the vine design appears to be incomplete; most of the vine is filled with herringbone stitches, but one end is mostly empty. One long edge of the linen is selvage; the other edges are raw. It has been stitched to a muslin backing.
