Description:
Woven carpet, from Upham-Walker House, Concord, NH. Brussels-type carpet fragment, machine-woven with supplementary wool loops and cotton warp and weft. The carpet is dark green, with an emerald green pattern of leaves forming the background. Scattered across the carpet are sprays of roses, also mostly green but with black highlights and a single pink rosebud. The fragment consists of two widths of carpeting, each 27" wide, machine-stitched together. (The machine stitching is an early type that is seen sometimes in Civil War uniforms--it's not a chain stitch and not a lock stitch, but another type that I have not yet been able to identify. LZB) The sides are selvedge and the ends are cut and unfinished. The back is woven with the manufacturer's name: "Whittall's."
