Rug

Object Name:
Rug
Object ID:
1973.066.01
Description:
Woven pile rug fragment, Oriental style, with wool pile, and wool warp and weft. This appears to be a border design from a larger carpet, as one side has been cut and raveled to form a fringe; the two short sides are overcast, and the other long side which was originally undoubtedly fringed, is now hemmed. The design of this fragment consists of a center field with six elongated octagonal shapes (almost diamond-shaped), outlined in blue-black and divided into four sections. They are filled with various geometric motifs. Between the lozenges, cross motifs are worked. The border design features stylized flower motifs within squares, edged with banded stripes on each side. The cut edge does not have the complete border, but is missing one edge of the banded stripes. The colors of the rug are shades of deep madder orange, cream, and blue-black. The pile is created with Turkish knots.
