Carpet

Date:
1840-1880
Description:
Woven Carpet. Rectangular, long and narrow. Woven with a yarn pile which has been cut rather long. Black border, flowers and leaves around the inside. Long central grouping of two very large roses surrounded by heavy leaves, heavy floral head at either end. Roses in reds and pinks, other flowers orange, all on cream background.

Rug with shaggy pile surface created by laying in bundles of yarns during the weaving process. The base fabric is a rag rug, woven with strips of blue and beige cotton fabric weft and heavy carpet cotton warp. The yarn bundles create a floral design such as those commonly seen in hooked rugs, with a spray of red and pink roses with olive-green foliage in the center on a cream background, framed with a floral border in similar colors. The rug is edged with a narrow black-brown border.
