Hooked Rug. Designed and made by Cora I. Shorey Bickford (1859-1930), "Shoreyville", East Rochester, NH. Made with strips of woven wool fabric, some of which were custom-dyed, on burlap. Design features a central oval medallion of flowers, including roses and pansies framed by blue reverse-curved scrolls. Background of this center field is pale beige. The field is bordered by a heavy oval vine of flowers, including roses, calla lilies, forget-me-nots, and pansies, and green and brown leaves. Outer border features blue scrolls enclosed within a line of pale lavender; the corners of the border are concave and have a bouquet of flowers worked within each curve. Background of the outer portion of the rug is shades of black. Entire rug is worked with extreme regularity, following the lines of the burlap's woven structure. Edges are finished with a binding of wide black cotton twill tape.
