Description:
Hooked Rug. Made from Turkish Pattern No. 108, manufactured by Edward S. Frost (1843-1894), Biddeford, ME; 1870-1876. Worked in a pseudo-Oriental design, with a central diamond motif centered with a quatrefoil. The edges of the diamond sprout various stylized Indiennes motifs; center section is on a black background. To the sides of central pattern are more stylized Indiennes motifs, non-representational, in a variety of colors, including pink and red, shades of lavender, blue, cream, and very pale green, gray, etc. Center field is framed with several borders, the inner one being a wavy line with colored splotches between the undulations, followed by straight lines in beige and pink. Outer border is formed of diagonal lines of color, forming a twisted effect, followed by a solid black/green edge. Worked with strips of woven wools, and a few silks on burlap. Edges are finished with a black wool tape stitched to the back.
