Description:
Hooked Rug. Made from a pattern designed by Edward S. Frost (1843-1894), Biddeford, ME; 1876-1900. Worked with strips of woven and knitted wool fabric on burlap. The central motif is a red, white, green, and blue cross on a white background, set within an elongated star design outlined in blue. This central pattern is framed by a concave-scalloped outline in red and yellow-green. The field within this frame is gray and the hooked loops appear to have been cut in this area of the rug only; ornaments in red outlined in black decorate the outer corners. The outer field is mottled green/beige and the edges are bordered with narrow lines of red and green-black, then bound with brown twill wool/cotton fabric. The white that appears is a knit cotton fabric, probably originally stockings; some of the red is also knit fabric.
