Object ID:

Description:
Spur. Iron and steel. Cast steel U-shaped body with arm extending to back in same plane as body. Arm is separate piece that has peened-over stub on inside surface of U-shaped portion. Arm was filed and shaped to make it look like it was integral part of whole assembly. Arm 2.2" long with vertical cast slot in it. Round cast steel rides in slot and rotates on iron shaft. Spur wheel-shaped with central pivot area and four elaborately decorated spokes that extend to circular band. Outer perimeter has ~38 points around it. One side of spur is plain; other side has some cast and some probably engraved or cast decorative lines. Each spur point has some triangular-shaped lines that end at sharp point. Circular band at base of points has some type of rope-shaped design either cast or cut into it; in either case, that surface is worn. Lines around edges of decorative spokes. Worn decoration at hub of spur wheel. At front of body, rectangular buckle area with rounded front surface. Two small horizontal slots in buckle. In bottom slot is a cylindrical band with decorative surface that rides in slot. Curved band has joint across it where it was pushed together to seal it in place. Top slot on one side has band that extends ~1". Raised button on one side of end near bend. Has different decorative shapes on sides. Similar device is in other slot on other side of spur. Evidence of broken button shaft in it; a few more decorative lines in portion that wraps around spur slot. Behind each buckle is a rectangular area with flat outside surface. Behind flat areas, arm curves around to meet spur support shaft. Curved areas have flat inside surface and slightly curved outside surface. Worn cast decorations in curved areas. Flat rectangular areas have worn decorations; outside surfaces of buckles have worn incised decorations. Spur support arm has some decorative shapes on each side that mirror each other. Some incised decorations along edges of support arms.
