Plane, Round

Object Name:
Plane, Round
Object ID:
1979.070.129
Description:
Cooper's plane, rounded. Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Two distinct portions of the plane. Wood handle piece then a blade holding assembly. The two portions held together by threaded-wood adjusting screws that have roughly rectangular thumb nuts on ends. Handle assembly has flat-top surface with stub ends of adjusting screws extending through it. Long straight edge is slightly convex. Short parallel sections on opposite side that are also convex and make up handles. Handles have square ends, also slightly convex. Roughly semi-circular area at center ~11" wide x 5.5" deep. Bottom side of handle assembly has some slight wear patterns on it. Cutting portion is elongated, semi-circular section that has clipped corners near handle ends. Cutting assembly is 3.3" deep x 9.3" wide x 1.8" thick. Cutting assembly made from single piece of wood that had its top 0.4" of thickness removed with some skill so pieces fit back together well. Near center of cutting assembly is tapered rectangular hole that is largest near long edge of handle side. Top end of slot is 0.6" thick x 1.3" long. To one side of that is another tapered slot that angles down from side to converge near the other slot. At its top end it is 0.55" thick x 1.3" long. The nearly vertical slot hold iron cover that has two protruding, cutting edges on its outside surfaces opposite each other. These rounded, cutting surfaces define edge of a slot. The second hole on side has single-edge blade that cuts out central area of a slot. Curved surface of cutting assembly conforms to inside surface of a barrel where slot is to be cut to hold wooden barrel head. On bottom surface of plane is semi-circular, relief area with beveled edge that leads to angled, straight edge. Rectangular blade-holding tapered slots were cut when the assembly was in two pieces. Blades heavy, tapered pieces of iron with some inactive corrosion on them.
