Plane, Molding

Object Name:
Plane, Molding
Object ID:
1979.070.126
Description:
Plane, molding, with fence. Dark brown hardwood. Chamfer on left side that starts about halfway up front, extends to square front corner. Diagonal ridge where vertical and horizontal chamfer meet. Horizontal chamfer extends to back rounded corner of plane and then extends downward to an undetermined point. Chamfer on right side mirrors that on left. Heavy U-shaped steel strap ~2" wide that extends horizontally ~6.75" around back of plane where it encloses bottom end of a vertical wood handle. Strap thickness tapers to thinner front edge that has small vertical chamfer on it. Strap ~0.25" thick at back end and 0.08" near front before chamfer. Five flat-head, recessed wood screws that hold strap to body. Two rectangular, horizontal holes in body that allow horizontal, wooden arms to pass through them. Each rectangular hole has a subsidiary rectangular keyway on the side. These keyways are on sides between support arms. Wedges and remnants of wedges that are in keyways. Vertical handle at back is ~6.5" high. Oval in cross-section above strap and all the way to a flat, top end. Bottom end of handle shaped to conform to space between heel of plane and inside surface of curved strap. Bottom of handle flat and nearly flush with bottom surface of steel strap. Small portion of handle at back overlaps and extends below top edge of strap. This phalange is broken with a couple of small pieces missing on its bottom edge. Iron washer and keened-over rod extending out top of handle ~0.2". Bottom terminus not seen of this rod. Rectangular hole in top surface in middle of right side which would accept blade tang and wedge, both of which are missing. Bottom surface of body is on two levels. Left side is lower than right. Flat on left side about 0.9" wide and flat on right side ~0.5" wide. On vertical surface between the two horizontal surfaces are two pieces of sheet iron that act as guide fence. Rear piece is 6.5" long on its bottom edge. Back edge is vertical; front edge inclined backwards to follow angle of blade tang hole. Front surface has slight V-shape on it. This would probably coincide with V-shaped notch on back edge of missing blade. Fence material is 0.08" thick. Three rivets that hold it in place with slightly-rounded heads on metal surface and larger rounded heads on wooden surface on left side of body. Another piece of iron fence material that is in front of blade and extends outward in front of body of plane. It protrudes 2.1" in front of toe. It is 0.2" thick. It has two rivets to hold it in place but are loose now due to horizontal crack in body. Bottom surface of this fence is flat and at top is small radius, upward turn to a short vertical section which then angles back toward toe with slight concave surface which then becomes horizontal shortly before toe. Back edge of this piece is beveled. Beveled edge has syma curve and extends upward into body. Top portion of this guide piece extends into a groove in body and subsequent vertical crack that extends to top surface of body near toe. Bottom edge of body on right side is quarter-round section with slight lip at top edge. On right side, just above where blade would be is deep rounded notch cut into side. Rectangular guide piece that extends vertically through body on left side and is 1.3" wide x 0.4" thick. Top portion has flat top edge with clipped corners. Its bottom surface extends through left, horizontal portion of sole. Section of it is exposed in angled hole for blade assembly. Horizontal arms that pass through body have flat-bottom surfaces, square corners at bottom, vertical sides, and slightly chamfered top edges. On left side, arms extend outward and is horizontal section that extends downward to top surface of a wood fence piece. Ends of arms are rounded and extend beyond fence with an undercut curve that leads downward to fence surface. Iron rivets with shallow, rounded top surfaces that are on top of arms that extend down and through fence and terminate in rectangular iron washers. Bottom ends of rivets are keened over. Fence piece is 1.6" wide. Inside surface extends downward 0.9". Quarter-round shape that leads outward to horizontal portion of fence. Outside of edge of horizontal fence section is semi-circular. Fence approximately same length as wooden body of plane. Rectangular notch on inside surface of fence that corresponds with vertical wooden guide bar that can protrude through plane sole on that same side.
