Object ID:

Description:
Plane, molding, with fence. "H.C". Very dark brown hardwood. Chamfer on body starts halfway up at front edge, extends upward to square, front corner, then extends backwards across top edge to a square, back corner, down side to a notch about halfway up. Chamfer on right side mirrors that on left. Horizontally, through body from left to right side are holes that have a flat-bottom and semi-circular top edge. Through them pass two wooden arms that hold a fence mechanism on left side. Extension below ends of each arm that has separate fence piece screwed to it. Outside ends of arms have decorated moldings in them. Wooden fence piece has flat top and flat interior, vertical surface. Near front of fence at right side is rectangular cutout that can encompass an adjustable metal fence that is part of main body. Bottom and front of adjustable fence has molded profiles as decorative elements. On body are thumb screws that tighten the fence arms. Front thumb screw missing head. Rear thumb screw appears to have replaced head. On top surface, behind front fence arm, thumb screw is an inlaid, rectangular, brass plate with two flathead screws holding it to top of body. Through plate passes threaded, iron rod with oval, brass, thumb screw on top. Thumb screw adjusts height of a rectangular, brass sole plate section that is missing. Material of missing sole plate unknown. The rectangular, brass plate has relieved interior edge to clear cutting iron. Cutting iron has flat edge, 0.22" wide, and is roughly centered on vertical iron and brass fence. Iron fence is 2" high x 0.9" thick. Near top edge is additional brass strip that is screwed through iron fence to vertical surface on right side of main body. Three flathead, iron screws that hold back portion of fence onto body behind the iron. In front of iron are two flathead, iron screws that fasten iron and brass to body. Iron fence extends 1.2" above flat sole on left side. Rectangular slot in sole of body where missing, adjustable sole plate would rest. Semi-circular chip relief area in iron and brass mechanism ahead of cutting iron. V-shaped slot back end of iron tang that rides over the V-shaped protuberance on front edge of iron and brass fence. Iron 0.3" thick at bottom end and tapers to top end. Small wing on right side of iron at top end which is roughly semi-circular where it extends over side of iron wing area. The very top edge of iron slightly turned over from being struck. Some small hammer marks on top end of wedge. Rectangular stamp on iron with two lines text, both very worn, bottom line: "CAST .....L", top line "...ROV.....". Adjacent to that is stamp that appears to have symbol and two or three characters, very corroded, illegible. On toe possibly a couple box stamps at top that are covered with debris. Three two-letter stamps "H. C." on front. Some have dried material over them. On the adjustable fence, vertical surface is an iron band, 1.1" wide, inlaid to vertical surface and secured with ~nine small, flathead screws and there is a cutout in this metal fence to accommodate missing adjustable sole plate. On body, just above where fence attached, bottom edge of body has quarter-round molding that is slightly recessed at top edge.
