Description:
Drawknife, "L DODGE", "J. WINKLEY", "1844". Wood, steel, and wrought iron. 11.1" between handles. Cutting blade 5.3" long. Depth of curve in front edge of blade: 0.22". Depth of maximum curvature of cutting edge: 0.8". Handles medium-brown wood. Bulbous-shaped at back end, then tapers to slight bulge at front. Iron ferrule around wood at front. Tangs of blade pass through center of handle and terminated in recessed square, flat, pyramidal washers with ends of tangs peened over. Ends of tangs filed or worked to conform to the shallow, pyramidal shape of inlaid washers. Bottom surface of blade flat. On bottom, definite line where steel blade welded into wrought iron. Adjacent to blade, wrought iron rectangular with chamfered edges. It tapers to a more narrow width, then bends upward slightly and turns at right angle to create tangs. Bottom edge of blade at front, slightly beveled in cutting area. Top and bottom edges of blade, flat and almost parallel. At cutting edge, blade beveled upward and away from edge. Cutting edge rounded at center. It then gently curves back and to side where it then bends towards the cutting side to create a point. Adjacent to that point, blade then turns backward for short distance to where it bends forward again to definite point. At that point, outside edge goes straight back at an angle to the main blade shaft. On opposite side, curves roughly duplicated with just a slight variation. On bottom surface, stamp on left side: "* 1844 *". On right side of blade, stamped in serif letters, "J. WINKLEY". On left hand handle, "L [D]O[D]G[E]" stamped in wood.
