- Description:
- Plane, block. "E.S. LORD". Light-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Chamfer starts in a notch about halfway up front edge, leads to square, front corner, proceeds backwards to point near handle where it curves down and back to a second lower level. It then proceeds to rounded back corner and halfway down side to a notch. Small abrasion at left front top corner. Chamfer on right side mirrors that of left side. Cutting surface flat. Width of blade and opening at mouth: 2.5". Iron stuck in place. On left side, behind handle is a small, angled start of a auger bit hole. Handle is D-ring shape with carved tab that leads backwards at top edge. Tab broken and repaired. Small piece missing from right side of it. Oval opening for fingers at front, 1.5" wide x 2.7" high. Handle is an inlay piece of wood, 0.95" wide x 4.25" long. Handle insert encompasses change in body heights. Inside front surface of handle ring is slightly crude due to tool marks that remain. Two horizontal stamps on heel, both same, "E. S. LORD". Some hammer marks on heel. "E. S. LORD" on toe, faces upward. Above it on toe is another stamp, facing down: "T B HUSSEY". Slight evidence of this same stamp above its prominent location. Iron and back iron stuck in place. These two irons have similar top edges with clipped corners. Iron has a couple of small areas where it is turned over slightly from being struck. Stamp on iron, all caps, san-seraph (one is circular): "HUMPHREYS .....". Below that is horizontal stamp with serif letters: "WARRAN.....".
