- Object ID:

- Description:
- Plane, block, with ivory button insert. Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood with some annular rings and some grain flecks showing on right side. Chamfer starts on left side at a notch about halfway up front, extends to square front corner. It runs across top edge to rounded back corner and halfway down side to where it terminates in a notch. Right side chamfer mirrors left side. Right side chamfer at rear is somewhat deeper and wider than left side. Cutting surface is a flat plane. Blade width: 2.3". Iron stuck in place. Slight diagonal bulge on left side that roughly parallels angle of iron. A strike button in top surface at front: 0.5" diameter and is raised above surface of surrounding wood and is ivory-color material, maybe ivory or bone or antler. Some old chips missing from top surface behind strike button which is evidence of some forceful abrasion. Some cracks in wood in front of mouth on top surface. Handle is an inlaid piece of wood and is roughly oval in cross-section, extends upwards with portion that extends across top of handle toward back to prevent hand slippage. Iron screw holding it in place near front. Inlay piece is 0.9" wide x 4" long. Some hammer marks on heel. Some file or rasp marks on toe near top edge where someone tried to abrade away a stamp. "H [w]". [.........] with portions of four or five characters on right side. Iron has slightly rounded top edge which is turned over from being struck. It has clipped corners. Two stamps, top one is rectangular, serrated edges on left, right edge obscured. "W. CREAVE[S] / & SONS". That's not as wide as top portion with serrated edge on left and probably on bottom right edge. Below that is stamp roughly horizontal oval with outside serrated edges with pinched-in effects at the narrow edges. Raised oval in center, also horizontal with plain surface and edges. There might be some slight serrations on bottom edge of this inner oval. All caps, serif: "WARRANTED / CAST*STEEL". [ * = pellet]. No back iron or notch for back iron.
