- Description:
- Plane, unfinished. Medium-to-light brown, fine-grained hardwood. Slight evidence annular rings on sides and good evidence of rings and rays on toe. Chamfer starts about halfway up the front, leads to square front corner, runs across top edge to back and terminates halfway down back. Back edge has small boat-tail effect at top edge. Chamfer on right side mirrors that on left. Cutting surface is concave groove. Iron width: 1.4" for groove. Groove depth: 0.12". Some sharp-edged strike marks on heel. On right side at back is a small horizontal crack near a couple of slightly abraded areas. Some other rough abraded areas on right that have smoothed with time. Slightly rounded chamfer across bottom edge from front to back on both sides. Plane slightly tapered at front and back edges in addition to the more-prominent chamfers. Front edge of mouth curved. Iron and back iron are held together by round-headed screw that fits into slot in bed. Iron has long slot and round keyway. Back iron has slightly curved downward front edge that also conforms to cutting edge curve of iron. Top edge of back edge of iron is straight and has slight chamfer. Corners of back iron clipped and slightly concave. Iron has flat top edge and slightly concave clipped corners. Top edge slightly turned over from being struck. Two stamps on iron. Rectangular stamp with semi-circular top edge. In center of semi-circular area is raised plain semi-circle. In center of that is depressed, 6-pointed star with smaller raised six-pointed star in center of it. All of the inner and outer edges are serrated. Very bottom edge is over-stamped so not sure if first stamp has serrated bottom edge as it has been stamped with another stamp. Letter in top stamp goes from left side around to left side and extends all the way around. "MOULSON BROTHERS" The next two lines are horizontal and fit between the "MO" at left side and "RS" at right side. "WARRANTED / CAST STEEL". Below that is stamped: "IMPROVED / WELDED".
