Object Name:
Plane, Molding
Object ID:
1979.070.098
Description:
Plane, molding. "E.S. LORD". Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Chamfer starts in a slot on left side about halfway up, extends up to square front corner then extends backwards to front of handle loop where it fades away. Chamfer on right side starts in a slot at top edge of extension then mirrors left side. Cutting configuration produces one rectangular tenon, 0.4" high x 0.3" wide based on slot height and gap in iron on plane. Vertical iron fence screwed to left side of plane on bottom, height 0.6". Cutting width adjacent to it is 0.3". Maximum cutting width on right side is 0.6". Iron fence is in two pieces. Top of extension is slightly concave. Upright-angled handle with finger loop across front that is an integral part of body. Curved piece at top of handle that extends backwards to limit upward movement of operator's hand. Oval for fingers is angled forward slightly, and is ~2.5" high and 1.4" wide at its greatest dimension. Upright handle portion corners rounded and smoothed to accommodate the hand. Front edge of oval has square edge. Marked on back: vertical stamp, facing right, all caps, serif letters: "E. S. LORD". On front of plane is vertically-oriented stamp of "E. S. LORD". Iron has tang on left side. Body of iron and tang are fairly thick. Some file marks on top and bottom surfaces of iron. End of tang has a smooth and round finish -- hasn't been struck.
