Plane, Molding

Object Name:
Plane, Molding
Object ID:
1979.070.097
Description:
Plane, molding. "E.S. LORD". Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Chamfer starts at small notch on front at top edge of extension, which is on left side, extends upward to square front corner, extends across top edge to front of handle loop where it ends. Chamfer on right side starts in a notch and mirrors that on left side. Top of extension is flat. Bottom left edge is slightly rounded and there are a few wear marks on bottom surface of extension. Cutting configuration is for plane to cut rectangular slot. Width of cut measured from blade: 0.3". Slot depth: 0.9" or slightly greater. On right side of plane is a vertical steel fence screwed to extension. Adjacent to it is another vertical fence with a space of 0.3" between them. The second fence is 0.125" thick. Slot height for lower fence is 0.8". Upper fence height 1.15", in two pieces, screwed to body of plane. Upper portion extends into a slot in wood ~0.3" high. Front of upper fence at slot has V-shape on its front surface. This acts as bed for the iron. Iron has small V-shaped slot in it that rides on the fence. Front fence piece has semi-circular, beveled area in it and has angled slot above it in the wood body that is fairly short. This relieved area allows for shavings. Upright-angled handle with finger loop across front that is an integral part of body. Curved piece at top of handle that extends backwards to limit upward movement of operator's hand. Oval for fingers is angled forward slightly, and is ~2.5" high and 1.4" wide at its greatest dimension. Upright handle portion corners rounded and smoothed to accommodate the hand. Front edge of oval has square edge. On right side at rear, bottom edge of handle flares out slightly. Stamp on front of plane, vertically-oriented, faces right, all caps, serif: "E. S. LORD". Iron is fairly thick and is a straight piece that tapers slightly towards rear. V-groove on bottom surface is 0.2" long. Some inactive corrosion on surfaces.
