Plane

Object Name:
Plane
Object ID:
1979.070.084
Description:
Plane, molding. "L DODGE". Medium-to light-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Somewhat narrow annular rings showing on both sides. Chamfer on left side starts with what might be a small groove, extends to slightly-rounded front corner, goes across top edge, and goes to rounded back corner and down side to where it stops in a non-original chamfer. Right side chamfer roughly mirrors left side chamfer. Area in front of and behind mouth have been cut away with large chamfers to create upwardly-curved sole. Sole surfaces in front of and behind mouth are elongated triangles with curved bottom planes. Sole height at front is 2.8". Sole height at back is 2.4". Cutting surface was probably flat. Width of cut is probably 0.9" based on mouth configuration. Area above mouth is curved and has chamfers on both sides. At top of curve, surface leads straight back to flat bed. Looking downward from top surface through slot where iron and wedge reside, appears to be round insert that extends roughly vertically through center of bed and there is a roughly round, wood plug in sole surface behind mouth. Plug slightly recessed and has rough surface. Couple small horizontal cracks on heel about halfway up from bottom edge. Stamp on heel vertically oriented, facing right side, box stamp, serrated edges, all caps, serif: "L. DODGE". Similar stamp on toe, vertically-oriented, facing left side: "L. DODGE". Both stamps are worn.
