Description:

Plane, molding. "J.R. TOLMAN", "HANOVER", "MASS". Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Annular rings showing in left side and some in right side at front. Chamfer starts at wide notch at front, goes up to front at square front corner, across top to a rounded back corner, down back to a notch. Right side chamfers match left side chamfers. Two large chamfers on left side that are essentially large, flat planes. Widest at front and back. Mirrored on other side of body. They create triangular sole surfaces. Sole surfaces curve upward toward front and upward toward back. Sole surface at front is 3.1" high. Sole surface at back is 3" high. Couple of old chips missing from heel. Old chip missing from left, back chamfer. Some old gouge indentations on left side near top. Cutting pattern is flat surface. Iron width is 1". Irons are slightly wider than body. Circular chamfered throat with chamfers on both sides. Top of throat chamfers lead straight back to bed area. Some hammer marks on heel. Some stamps on toe. Marks vertically-oriented, facing left side. Three box stamps. Top stamp serrated top edge. Left edge plain and slightly curved inward. Middle stamp in box stamp serrated edges. Bottom stamp is box-shaped with some serrated edges. Stamps are uneven and not entirely legible, but from previous examples, all caps, serif: "J. R. TOLMAN" (top), middle:"HANOVER" (part of "N" and "O" aren't legible), bottom stamp: "MASS." Bottom stamp in this example is somewhat illegible. Irons are stuck in place. Iron and back iron have central tangs. Back iron tang is longer and thinner than tang on iron. Both tang ends are slight turned over from being struck. Back iron tang has a small bend near top end. Inactive corrosion on both irons.
