Object Name:
Plane
Object ID:
1979.070.074
Description:
Plane, molding. "E S LORD". Combination light and dark brown, fine-grained, dense hardwood. Chamfer on front that starts with groove, leads across top edge to slightly boat-tailed rear end, then it proceeds down back to an area of wood imperfections. Right side has chamfering that just starts near middle, runs up front side to right angle front edge, runs across top edge to boat tail rear end and proceeds down back side to a point near division of two colors of wood. Cutting pattern is flat surface. Iron width 1.75". Iron stuck in place. Sides of body swell towards center. Body width at front is 1.7", at back 1.25". Some old chips on sole missing at front edge. Some chipping around mouth opening on sole. Looks like some additional filing to wood on heel and toe. Upside down stamp on toe, stamped three different times: "E. S. LORD". One stamp is strong, one weaker and overlaps it slightly and another one below it that is obscured and intentionally abraded due to filing of front surface. Iron stuck in place. It looks as if body has shrunk around iron a little bit. Iron and back iron held together with cap screw that rides in a slot. Iron has flat end and steeply clipped corners. Top end of iron turned over slightly from being struck. Stamp or stamps on iron. Top stamp, curved upward in middle: "W. BUTCHER". Below this is "*" struck in, the three symbols in a row: first is circle with something in center. To right directly under asterisk is right pointing arrow with feathers, pointing to right; [German] iron cross to right of arrow. Below symbols are two lines: "WARRANTED / CAST STEEL". Body of plane is quite heavy for its size.
