- Description:
- Plane, "L DODGE", "J.R. TOLMAN", "HANOVER", "MASS". Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Annular growth rings evident on sides and heel. Cutting pattern is ogee curve starting at left side, proceeding to right. Then there is slight straight bevel at top edge than recedes away from curve. Curve and bevel are cut into an insert. Insert has two rectangular keys on its sides near top edge. It is 1.15" high at its greatest height, 1.3" wide at top. Keys are ~0.2" high x 0.1" wide. Ends of insert are slightly recessed due to minor shrinkage. Insert is in two pieces due to aperture for irons to pass through it. Front edge of mouth is curved to follow the configuration of the iron as it passes through insert. On sole are some chatter marks in the bevel edge of insert. Chamfer on left side starts at a notch approximately half-way up, proceeds to top square front edge, proceeds across top of body to a square back edge and down heel to another notch. Chamfer on right side approximately mirrors that on left side although it is slightly shorter from top to bottom due to the fact that right side is not as tall as left side. Top back edge of body is rounded to a boat-tail type of end. Depression in heel of body where it has been struck repeatedly. Some dents in heel end of insert as well. Some marks on toe of body. Three horizontal marks together at top edge of toe. Top one is box mark with serrated top and bottom edges. Ends appear to be plain. Left edge is slightly bowed in at center. Lettering all caps, serif: "J. R. TOLMAN". Below that is another box stamp serrated edges: HANOVER". Below that is another box stamp serrated edges, all caps: "MASS." Vertically-oriented stamp near left side, faces right side, box stamp, serrated edges, all caps, serif: "L. DODGE". Near middle of toe is box stamp that faces up, serrated edges, all caps, serif: "L. DODGE". Iron and wedge are stuck in place. Iron has back iron which is shorter and barely protrudes above top edge of body. Iron has turned-over top edge from being struck. Top edge is flat and are short, diagonal clipped corners. Inactive corrosion on iron. Slot in body behind iron for a bolt head and one can probe to find metal at bottom of slot. One can see bottom edge of back iron follows pattern of iron very closely.
