- Description:
- Plane, molding. "L DODGE". Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Annular rings on right side. Some old abrasions and slight surface chipping on left side. Vertical crack on left side of heel that extends forward along sole ~1.75". Body has shrunken around iron so that there are cracks at ends of mouth opening. Cracks run along sole. Left side crack extends in front of and behind mouth opening ~2.5" long. Crack on right side extends in both directions and is ~2.2" long. Chamfer on left side starts at notch, approximately half-way up, proceeds to square front corner, across top edge, to square back edge, down back side to notch. Right side roughly mirrors left side. Top back edge is rounded to form boat-tail rear end. Top front corners are slightly more rounded than usual, but is probably due to wear. Cutting surface is convex plane. Height of cut at center is 0.3". A number of hammer marks on heel of body. Some diagonal tool marks on heel as if it was smoothed out slightly. Marks on toe. Some small dimples in toe. Some parallel abrasive tool marks on toe that are almost vertical. At least three box stamps on toe. They all appear to be same box stamp, serrated edges, all caps, serif letters: "L. DODGE". Remnants of maybe three characters stamped on front. "T" and maybe "R" and probably an "E" or "F". Characters were overstamped by one of two of the "DODGE" stamps. Near top horizontally is "BOS" in raised characters and possibly right serrated edge remnants near top edge of toe. Iron and wedge stuck in place. Slot behind iron. Something metallic in bottom of slot. Top edge of keyway is observable in iron. Top edge iron turned over from being struck. Top edge is essentially straight edge, corners are shallow, clipped corners. Back iron appears to have rounded corners and flat top. Bottom edge of back iron conforms closely to iron.
