Object Name:
Plane
Object ID:
1979.070.066
Description:
Plane, molding. Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Distinct annular rings left and right sides. Body has shrunken slightly. Area around mouth and bed opening are slightly wider than area behind it. Cracks running lengthwise, just above sole on sides where wood had shrunk around iron. Body width is ~0.05" narrower behind iron. Chamfer on left side starts at a slot, proceeds up to front corner, across top and down to back square edge and down back to another notch. Right side chamfer mirrors left side chamfer. Back edge of top is rounded to form a boat-tail. Two straight, wide chamfers on either side of body at bottom edge. Cutting pattern is a shallow, wide, concave surface. Width as measured on iron is 1.8". Depth of cut at center is 0.1". Sole is slightly curved upward at front and back. Height at center is 2.25" Height at front is 2.3". Height at back is 2.3". A number of old hammer marks on heel. Some hammer marks on toe. Stamp on toe, near middle, facing upward. Box stamp, serrated edges, all caps, serif: "L. DODGE". Stamp has unusual appearance of being larger at front edge from back edge so "DODGE" letters get smaller from left to right. Iron and wedge stuck in place. Back iron is shorter than iron. Slot in body for bolt-head to hold iron and back iron together. One can feel metal in bottom of slot behind cutting iron. Round keyway and slot in iron. Top edge of iron has been rolled over quite a bit due to striking. Top edge is straight and corners are rounded. Back iron is curved at bottom to follow curvature of iron.
