- Description:
- Plane, "T.J.M. MASTER & CO", "AUBURN", "NY". Medium-brown, fine-grained hardwood. Front chamfer starts at notch, runs up front edge to square front corner, runs across top edge to rounded back corner, then around back edge to notch and this notch is same height as top edge of extension at right side. Chamfering on right side mirrors that on left. On left side is small straight chamfer across bottom edge at center. Sole has been cut away at front and back edges to create a slightly curved bottom edge. Definite tool marks to show cutting done after planed originally manufactured. Front surface has been cut away ~1.75" and back surface cut away 2.5". Cutting pattern on sole is roughly ogee curve with small groove at top and then flat surface above that. Cutting pattern on iron does not have flat surface at top or right edge. Pieces of wood insert missing at toe and heel. Insert height 0.45" based on remnants of insert that is there. Width of insert 0.15". Extension has small shallow groove across top edge of it. Some cross-hatch patterns near top of extension behind bed. Some similar cross-hatch patterns in body above extension near center of plane. Number of small hammer marks on heel. Very small crack on heel at top, right edge of insert spot. Stamped on front in main part of toe near toe, horizontally oriented, roughly overall oval shaped. Top circular edge has a number of small scallops with small raised points in their centers. Curved text: "T * J * M[c] MASTER & Co".(* is a pellet). Below that slightly turned up is: "AUBURN" which has serrated bottom edge, top edge small scallops with dot in center. Right and left edges have ribbon that falls down into small curlycue on both sides. Below that in straight line: "N * Y". Possibly serrated edge of "N Y" and serrated edge at top. Space in center below "MASTER" is a spread eagle with head pointing left. Approximately 10 stars above eagle which curve to match bottom edge of text. Bottom edge of text in the line above eagle is serrated. Under eagle on left side looks like branch with leaves on it. Obscured something right side. Stars appear to have more than 5 or 6 points which are rounded. Back iron and iron have tang on left side. Back iron tang bent downward in a couple spots. End turned over by being struck. Stamp on end of iron tang that is partial: "...OAT". Iron has tang on left side with one downward bend in middle and end turned over by being struck. Both iron and back iron has residues of stable corrosion on them.
